In 1974, a meteorite carrying a remarkable black hedgehog with red stripes, referred to as Shadow, crash-landed in Oklahoma. The U. S. military quickly secured the alien entity, assigning Professor Gerald Robotnik the responsibility of examining its vast power. Inside a highly classified G. U. N. (Guardian Units of Nations) research facility, Shadow developed a deep connection with Gerald’s granddaughter, Maria. A tragedy occurred when an escape attempt from the facility triggered an explosion, resulting in Maria’s death. In the wake of this event, Gerald was confined to prison, and Shadow was put into suspended animation.
Five decades later, in 2024, the inactive Shadow is stirred awake by an enigmatic hacker who breaches a G. U. N. prison facility off the coast of Japan. Driven by retribution for Maria’s demise, Shadow escapes, causing a path of destruction in Tokyo. Meanwhile, in Green Hills, Montana, Sonic commemorates the anniversary of his arrival on Earth with his companions Tails, Knuckles, and his adoptive parents, Tom and Maddie Wachowski.
Their celebrations are disrupted by G. U. N. Director Rockwell, who recruits “Team Sonic” to capture the rogue hedgehog.
When they confront Shadow in Tokyo, Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles are quickly overpowered. They retreat and seek guidance from Commander Walters, who discloses Shadow’s tragic past. Their discussion is abruptly interrupted when Dr. Ivo Robotnik’s drones launch an assault, mortally injuring Walters. With his last breath, Walters gives Sonic a keycard, stressing its significance. Doubts arise when Rockwell notices the absent keycard and questions Team Sonic’s motives.
In their search for clarity, Team Sonic meets Agent Stone, Robotnik’s devoted assistant, who claims no connection to the recent assaults. This unexpected partnership takes them to a deserted G. U. N. facility, where they reveal the truth: Gerald Robotnik, Ivo’s estranged grandfather, orchestrated Shadow’s liberation and the drone attacks. Gerald discloses his invention, the Eclipse Cannon, a powerful space-bound laser capable of destroying any target on Earth. With one keycard already in Shadow’s hands, Gerald aims to acquire the second to turn on the weapon and take revenge on G. U. N.
Shadow seizes the keycard from Tails and initiates a black hole to obliterate the base, escaping alongside the Robotniks. Team Sonic narrowly evades through a ring portal and pledges to avert the looming disaster. They recruit Tom and Maddie to sneak into G. U. N. ‘s London headquarters and retrieve the second keycard. Despite their attempts, Shadow blocks their path, seriously injuring Tom and acquiring the final key. With the Eclipse Cannon now functional, the future of Earth hangs in the balance.
Fueled by anger and a longing for revenge, Sonic channels the power of the Master Emerald, morphing into Super Sonic. He faces off against Super Shadow in an epic showdown, where both fighters struggle with their internal conflicts and the burden of their previous losses. Through their intense battle, Sonic aids Shadow in understanding that love and treasured memories should influence one’s actions, rather than revenge. Bonded by this realization, they commit to thwarting Gerald’s catastrophic plan.
On the Eclipse Cannon, Gerald’s ulterior motives are revealed: he seeks to eliminate Earth as vengeance for Maria’s demise. Ivo, who favors control over chaos, tries to stop the countdown, resulting in a clash between grandfather and grandson. With the timely assistance of Tails and Knuckles, they succeed in subduing Gerald, steering the cannon’s firing away from Earth, accidentally cutting off a segment of the Moon. During this, Sonic loses his super form and descends toward Earth, only to be saved by his loyal friends. In a final moment of atonement, Ivo and Shadow give up their lives to guarantee the cannon’s obliteration, preventing a worldwide disaster.
Back in Green Hills, normalcy begins to resume. Tom heals from his wounds, and the connection between Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles becomes even stronger. While participating in a casual race, Sonic unintentionally ends up in New York City, where he is ambushed by a legion of Metal Sonic robots. In the midst of the combat, he is saved by Amy Rose, a powerful ally with her own enigmatic background. Unbeknownst to them, Shadow survives the destruction of the Eclipse Cannon, paving the way for future escapades.
